I just finished John Scalzi's Ghost Brigades and this very idea is central to the novel. I suggest you take a peak at it. Scalzi, in his acknowledgements, freely... well, acknowledges, that he borrowed the idea from (*taps forehead thoughtfully, can't remember the name*) a fellow sci-fi author.
