I’m Frakking Lee Adama

No, not me. (TMI!) STARBUCK. Read on.

Frakking Lee Adama

So, if you read the Weekly Roundup post yesterday then you’ve seen Sarah Silverman’s confession to boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel. Then there’s, Kimmel’s, um, rebuttal, explaining his infatuation with Ben Affleck. Kevin Smith got in on the game too (but his is completely uncensored, so not-work-safe.)

This continuing meme got me thinking of how this could apply to so many things. Like Battlestar Galactica and the love triangle between Starbuck, Lee “Apollo” Adama and Sam Anders. Hey, I’ve been completely honest about my geekdom, but if there was any doubt…click on the more link below. Just remember parody is the highest form of flattery.

Weekly Roundup

Published in Weekly Roundup | 0 comments

–Come fly with me, let’s take off in the blue: Over the weekend I had the opportunity to try a bottle of Boarding Pass Shiraz by Grateful Palate Imports and loved it. The label is fun: it looks like an air travel boarding pass with a luggage tag around the bottle neck as well as an illustration demonstrating how to open the bottle. They also have another wine called First Class with an equally fun aviation-related label.

“Bitch is the new black”: After I tracked down the Boarding Pass Shiraz, I discovered that Grateful Palate Imports also has a grenache called “Bitch.” The “Shelf Talker” handout describes it thusly:

“This is a wine about pleasure. Subversive pleasure. Not everyone needs to approve in order for YOU to have pleasure. The Bitch is from Barossa. It’s mainly Northern Barossa fruit. Mainly bush vine, but also some trellised vineyards. Chris Ringland makes the wine. The wine sees no oak. The objective of the wine is to provide pure, explosive, unadulterated, hedonistic, uncompromising, juicy Grenache.”

It’s subversive, like Danger Gals. I must try this wine and if it’s good it just might become the official beverage of choice at DG HQ.

Jason Momoa–Shave and a haircut. Oh noes! Stargate Atlantis spoiler: in the episode Broken Ties, Jason Momoa (Ronon) loses his dreadlocks. Evidently Momoa cut them off during the show’s hiatus. I’m glad they worked it into Ronon’s character arc. Hat tip: io9.

–Think differently. The trailer is out for MacHeads The Movie. I love my Mac(s), but probably not as much as these people love theirs.

–I’m having a vuja-day about this dejavu, but maybe it’s just jamais vu. I always thought that “vuja-day” was the opposite of “dejavu,” but it turns out that distinction actually belongs to “jamais vu.” All joking aside, the New York Times has just started a good Migraine Blog: Perspectives on a Headache. Hat tip: The Neurophilosopher

–So many web sites suffer from “keming” that it pains me. My first objective as a designer is to eradicate Comic Sans though. Hat tip: Kraehe.

–Taking one for the team. Evidently, infertile sperm in the ejaculate of fruit flies go all kamakaze for their band of brothers.

–Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Kevin Smith really get around. First, there was Sarah Silverman’s confession to boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel. Then, Kimmel, um, rebutted, with his infatuation with Ben Affleck. Now, Kevin Smith gets in on the game.

Thirteen Songs On My Writing Playlist

(#18)

Some writers play music while they write, some can’t stand it. I’ve reached the point where I need quiet when I write, but during the rest of my day I like to listen to songs that remind me of my characters and story so that I can “write” in my head all day long while I take care of other more mundane tasks. If it’s not evident from this playlist, my characters are all quite angsty. I like ‘em dark and tortured, it just makes for a deeper character arc.

Here are 13 songs on my current playlist that relate in some way to my three WIPs: AVATAR, REMEMBRANCER and HUNTED:

1. Caught in the Sun by Course of Nature (AVATAR, Jana)
2. One Thing by Finger Eleven (AVATAR, Brannon))
3. Heroes by Shinedown (REMEBRANCER, Meredith)
4. Devil With The Green Eyes by Matthew Sweet (HUNTED, Jake)
5. Going Under by Evanescence (HUNTED, Meredith)
6. Born Yesterday by Forty Foot Echo (HUNTED, Jake)
7. First Time by Lifehouse (REMEMBRANCER, Ian & Elena)
8. Far Away by Nickelback (HUNTED, Jake & Meredith)
9. Invisible Man by Theory of a Dead Man (HUNTED, Jake)
10. You Don’t Know What It’s Like by Econoline Crush (AVATAR, Rodrik)
11. Hemorrhage by Fuel (REMEMBRANCER, Elena)
12. Bring Me To Life by Evanesence (REMEMBRANCER, Elena)
13. Alt.End by The Cure (REMEMBRANCER, Ian)

Bonus: Love’s Divine by Seal (all three stories)

Weekly Roundup

Published in Weekly Roundup | 0 comments

Since I was a slacker earlier this week, I offer the Weekly Roundup now and a bit longer than usual.

Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

–My Danger Gal Friday profile on Luka Starkiller was picked up by the 20th Carnival of Feminist SF titled The Diamond Age

–Blake Stacey also had some insightful musings on Luka Starkiller with the “Weekend Fluff: Luke as a Girl” post.

–The new Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull trailer is out. Harrison Ford is still hot, especially for being a gazillion years old.

–Michael May has some deep thoughts on the notion of modern working mothers being “Wonder Woman.”

–Linnea Sinclair’s rebranded covers are out and girl, are they nifty.

–Is the environment “sponge worthy?” New CO2 sponges filter carbon up to 83 times its volume

–Be your own iPod battery. Nano-bristle T-shirt to harness your power moves

–Our bodies and nanotech. Will Puny Particles Present Big Health Problems?

The secret life of sperm. Who said there isn’t sexism any more?

How long could you live in a vacuum? I’m not talking about a Dyson.

Danger Gal Friday: Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina

This week’s Danger Gal Friday profile is on Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina a.k.a Magik a character from the Marvel Comics X-Men.

magik.jpgMagik literally goes to Hell and back in the X-Men comics and while there she usurps the throne for herself. This is a woman in charge.

After Belasco kidnaps a young Magik and takes her to the demon dimension Limbo (pretty much like Hell, I imagine), Magik’s captor teaches her black magic. How this Lolita-Persephone motif gets turned on its head is that two female characters — Limbo’s version of Storm and Shadowcat — teach Magik white magic and swordplay.

Often in this kind of motif, it’s another man who teaches the young girl the skills she needs, so this switch to not just one but two female mentors is important.

Later, Magik rebels against Belasco and enthrones herself in Limbo as the sorceress supreme. (That kind of sounds like girl power to me…)

Magik’s mutant powers include the ability to teleport across time and space, astral projection, sense mystical presences, and cast simple spells. While in Limbo she forged Soulsword, “the ultimate embodiment of her mystical might,” and when in use her left arm is encased in mystical armor that endows her with super-strength.

I am by no means an expert on Magik, so if anyone has some additional points about how she fits the Danger Gal profile, please make it known in the comments.

Also, I found some great art galleries of Magik at Sorceress Supreme.

Charlie Sexton, Beat So Lonely

Published in Music | 0 comments

I remember Charlie Sexton’s hair being bigger. Those cheekbones though, oh my, like a David Bowie clone. Check out the skinny jeans Sexton wears in this video. Did you think they were new?

As a teenager I must have played this album until I wore out the tape.

Danger Gal Friday: Sarah Connor

This week’s Danger Gal profile is Sara Connor from the Terminator series of movies and the new TV show Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles. I thought I had already written up a profile on Sarah Connor based on the Terminator movies, but a quick look at the archives shows that I haven’t. So, read on!

Sarah Connor Chronicles

First of all, it seems like a divergence from the TV status quo that this new series is about Sarah Connor rather than John Connor. Sure, there are other shows whose main protagonist is female, but the creators specifically chose to tell the story from the point of view of an over 30 mother rather than her messianic son. A mother has become the world’s savior, and even the promo material bills Sarah Connor as “the mother of tomorrows.”

When looking across the movies and the new TV series, the idea about Sarah Connor that strikes me is her metamorphosis from an average, every-day woman to one take-charge bad-ass you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. In the movies, I appreciated that Linda Hamilton built up muscle for Termintor 2, which outwardly shows the transformation of her character. I always appreciate it when actors make it a point to beef up for a role that calls for it, this makes my suspension of disbelief much easier.

So far, I’m definitely enjoying the new series. The addition of Summar Glau’s Cameron character is an interesting development. As I mentioned in a previous post, I wonder if this machine is based on an actual person in John’s future life.

And did I also say I hope Michael Biehn makes a cameo appearance at some point? Oh yeah, I have said that, haven’t I?
