I'm still eagerly awaiting your post about Bette Davis and the lack of strong women in today's cinema. I found myself nodding through a lot of Johann Hari's essay. You make a good practice of pointing out strong women characters in genre fiction (I especially liked the points about motherhood and being a protector figure in the post about Athena on Battlestar Galactica); HOWEVER (now that I think about it) Hari is right on about the dearth of tough women in more mainstream movies. It's great that the babes get to be tough in our fantasy flicks, but what about in the gritty, "real-life" dramas?

I just saw Juno recently and I loved the kid. I especially love the scene after she tells her parents that she's pregnant. Her father mutters, "Next time I see that Bleeker kid I'm gonna punch him in the weiner," and her stepmother dryly admonishes, "Oh come on, you know it wasn't his idea."

Totally cracked me up, and completely summed up Juno's character.

Hey, maybe I should write a post about it.

I'm glad you liked the Athena post. The Juno idea would be a great subject for a blog post, and I do promise to get back to that Bette Davis idea. This week has gotten away from me a bit.

It is true that there are few good roles for actresses in today's movies. The Jezebel blog regularly features posts called "Hookers, Victims & Doormats," based on a quote by Shirley MacLaine that "the best parts for actresses fall into one of the above categories." [Quote is of Jezebel not MacLaine, gotta get my attribution down, yanno.]

My Danger Gal posts generally concentrate on Science Fiction and Fantasy and also speak to the "kick-ass taking names" type of character, but on my group blog, <a href="http://www.writersatplay.com/wordpress/' rel="nofollow">Writers At Play, I try to profile contemporary heroines who may or may not carry a gun, but are definitely proactive in their own lives. Most of these have so far been from the Romance genre, in part due to that kind of character popping up so rarely in mainstream movies.
